Empowernment of Women and Youth for climate change resilience and Environmental conservation in Nyagatare District.
Deforestation in Nyagatare District is a serious environmental challenge that is mainly attributed to excessive dependence and use of firewood as the main source of fuel. The collection of firewood is traditionally carried out by women and girls which in turn exposes them to increased workload as well as physical and sexual violence. But also, unemployed male youth contribute to deforestation through collecting firewood for selling. The project aims to empower women and youth from 5 sectors of Nyagatare district for environment protection and climate change resilience by providing cooking stoves and briquettes to 6000 poor households both male headed and female headed households with varying vulnerabilities; and training young girls and boys on how to make briquettes and cooking stoves, for them to turn that skill into an income generating activity.
